Fragrance Oil and Candle Making

fragrance oilWhen it comes to candle making, in order to have the best smelling candles, you must use concentrated fragrance oil.  There are a vast number of fragrance oil companies in the market, many of them sell good quality oils for candle making, and on the other hand there are some companies that sell lower cost fragrances which are usually diluted.  Never use any fragrance oils that are alcohol based for candle making.  Caution- there are companies that sell “potpourri fragrance oils”, these fragrance oils are about 50% concentrated.  They are cut with a product called DPG.  DPG (or dipropylene glycol) is used to dilute fragrance oils.  Do not use these types of fragrance oils for candle making, they will inhibit your candles from burning properly.

Once you have found a company that sells concentrated fragrance oils, you will only want to use 1 ounce to 1.5 ounces of candle scent per pound of wax.  As long as you have selected the right kind of wax- a high quality one- you will never need to use more than 1.5 ounces of candle scent per pound of wax.  Using more than the stated amount of fragrance oil in your candle wax will result in unused fragrance in the bottom of your pouring pot or candle container.  This is wasted fragrance oil that was not absorbed by your wax.

Natures Garden supplies 100% concentrated fragrance oils to its customers.  These scents were formulated by master perfumists, using aromatic chemicals and essential oils to create wonderfully smelling fragrances that can be used to make candles.  In fact, about 99% of Natures Garden’s fragrance oils also work in other applications besides candles.  This includes:  cosmetics, bath and body products, and even cold process soap.  Natures Garden is dedicated to providing its customers with unique, fine, fragrance oils at wholesale prices not retail prices.  Our company is able to sell these high quality oils at great prices because we are the largest supplier of fragrance oils in the USA, which has allowed us to achieve bulk buying power from our perfumists.  And then, we pass the savings on to our customers.  Our high quality, affordable-priced fragrance oils allow our customers to maintain high profit margins on their finished products.

Chemistry of Fragrance

Essential oils are 100% natural (usually plant derived).  These scenting oils are commonly attained by a process known as steam distillation.  Essential oils are very costly as compared to fragrance oils.  Fragrance oils came into existence because of these high costs.  Perfumists started replicating the aroma of certain essential oils by mixing the right combinations of over 3,000 various aromatic chemicals.  These aromatic chemicals are known as aldehydes and ketones.  Aldehydes and ketones are all polar to some degree.  It is actually impossible for fragrance oils to be NON Polar.  Every fragrance oil has some degree of polarity to them.  Yes, it is true that some fragrance oils will be more polar than others, but a fragrance oil can never be completely NON Polar.  Perfumists are able to create a fragrance oil that is less polar by using isopar solvents, but once again, there will still be a small degree of polarity from the aromatic chemicals used to form the fragrance oil.

Fragrance oils that are used to scent gel wax have to be on the lesser side of being polar.  A great tip for testing if a fragrance oil will work in gel wax is to first check the flashpoint.  The flashpoint of the oil has to be above 170 degrees Fahrenheit.  Then, see if the fragrance oil will mix in mineral oil, if the solution becomes cloudy, the fragrance oil will not work.  If the solution is clear, the fragrance oil is gel wax compatible.

MSDS/IFRA/RIFM

We at Natures Garden want to keep you informed on every single fragrance oil we carry.  All of the fragrance oils sold by Natures Garden abide by the safety recommendations set forth by the IFRA and RIFM standards.  Natures Garden also supplies the MSDS information for each and every fragrance oil as well.  The MSDS and IFRA Certification of Compliance can be found on the website, under the fragrance performance- testing in various applications section.  Each MSDS and IFRA certificate can be easily printed right off the Natures Garden website.  EU customers are now provided EU allergen reports for all of our fragrances.

How much candle wax do I need to fill my jars?

candle wax

How much candle wax do I need to fill my jars?

One of the most frequent questions we are asked by new candle makers is:  How much candle wax will I need to fill my jars?  And, the solution is really simple to find out with this equation.

Basically, you will find that 1 pound (by weight) of candle wax will equal 20 ounces (in volume) when pouring into containers or molds.  With this knowledge, you can use simple math to figure out how much candle wax you will need to fill your containers or molds.

Take for example that you are making 6 oz. hexagon container candles for a wedding.  For this order, you have to make a total of 200 wedding candles.  The question you are asking yourself is, “how much candle wax will you need to fill all 200- 6oz. jars”?  Here is the equation to figure it out:  Take 200 x 6 to come up with your total weighted ounces.  For this example, the answer is equal to 1200 ounces.  Now, you must divide your total weighted ounces (1200 ounces) by 20 (volume ounces) to find out the total pounds of wax you will need for your wedding (60 pounds of wax).

Let’s try one more example since the 16oz. jar size is one of the most popular sized jars that candle makers sell.  Now, you want to make 24 candles, all of which will be poured into 16 oz. jars.  This equation would compute to:  24 (the amount you have to make) x 16 (the ounce size of the jar)= 384 (the total number of ounces).  Now take 384 and divide this by 20 (the volume) and the answer you get is 19.2 pounds of wax (thus you should likely get 20 pounds of wax to cover yourself.

Remember the equation:  Number of Candles you want to make  (multiplied by)  Volume of your containers  (divided by)  20 = Total number of pounds of wax you will need to do your project.

We hope that this simple equation will help you figure out how much wax you will need in the future.

Happy Candle Making!

Unique Soy Wax Candles

Monday, July 29th, 2013

teachersWhat’s your name & Your Company Name:  Melissa Brown and my company name is D~Liteful Creations Candle Co.

I have always enjoyed candles and always bought from big well-known companies but I always seemed to feel I was throwing my money away because the candles would always burn so fast and the scent was never strong enough. One day I decided I was going to do some research and find out how to make candles and what types of wax there was. Then I decided on Soy wax because of all the benefits it has. So I started experimenting and teaching myself all the basics of candle making. I started out with just jar candles only and then started making specialty candles that I love creating and have also moved into body products since my business has grown.  I have been creating my own products since 2010 and it started out as a hobby but has grown into a business that I enjoy and love.

This creation is called “Teachers Have Class”  Back to School.

Letting Others Do Nice Things For You

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

help

Mike’s sister came in from Oklahoma for a visit, and it was so nice seeing her and meeting her new boyfriend.  Every time Lynette comes to town, I sit for hours talking with her.  She is such a positive, fun person; she is your quintessential “people magnet”.   Her boyfriend, Bruce, is a down-to-earth, yet very successful, intelligent man who said something that really got me thinking.

Bruce said, “You should let people do nice things for you”.  I thought about this statement intensely.  How many people in my life have offered to pay for things, or do things for me and I have said, “No…let me get it”, or “No…let me pay for it”.   I always thought that I was being courteous by doing so, but was I stealing other people’s joy by doing so?  According to Bruce, “It makes others feel good to do things for others, and you shouldn’t steal that joy from them”.   You know what?  Bruce is right!

The next time someone wants to do something nice for you, don’t reply by saying “NO”.  Reply by saying, “That is so very thoughtful of you, thank you for being so kind to me”.

Have a Flaming Awesome Day!!

Fragrance Trends Fall 2013

300x300-trends-reportFragrance Trends Fall 2013

In order to help our customers create marketing promotions for upcoming seasons, the staff at Natures Garden has completed a 2013 Fragrance Trend Report.  In this trend report, we also mention the color trends and fashion trends that will be hot for Fall/Winter 2013/2014.  Both research and intuition went into this report; allowing us to report how the moods of society will shape the upcoming trends.

Once we realized what the upcoming trends would be, we worked diligently with our perfumist to design fragrances that reflected those up-coming trends.  We would like to thank our perfumist for creating these scents multiple times for us to get exactly what we were looking for.  Once these new fragrances were created, tested, and approved, our graphic artist designed the trends report and fragrance graphics to make these trends “come alive”.   We expect delivery of these new Trend Scents the week of July 8th.

Without further adieu….Our Fragrance Trends Report for Fall 2013.  Go to the fragrance trends report to print out this entire report.

Trends are developed from socio-economic stimuli  and world events that we as a society encounter.  Colors, fashion, design, and fragrance are all influenced by how we see the world around us.  While there are several trends that we will highlight in this report, the driving trend behind all of them is what we call “Free Spirited vs. Deeply Rooted”.  This trend represents a division that is taking place between those in society who are embracing fast change, and those who are reverting back to a grass-roots mentality that would like to change things back to how they were many years ago.  Change is the key word here.

Fall & Winter are seasons which embrace more intense, full-bodied, heavier fragrances that provide a sense of serenity and warmth during cold months.  The key for 2013/14 is the combination of fragrance ingredients used to create new and intriguing experiences rooted in the familiar; or use of unexpected varietals not often used.

trend colors fall 2013In addition to fragrance trends, color trends are also influenced by socio-economic factors and world events.  The colors on this page are the color trends for fall & winter 2013/2014.  Interestingly enough, 4 of the 13 color trends are colors found in camouflage; leading us to believe that there is a down-home country trend on the horizon.  Pantone has stated that Emerald Green is the main color of Fall 2013.

Hot fashion trends are turtlenecks,  clutch purses, slouchy pants that are narrowed at the ankle and sit high on the waist, rounded shoulders, and gold/copper begin to replace silver as the metallic of choice.
